About Plebity The word ‘Plebity’ refers to everyday people, and in this spirit the organization was created by a small team from a kitchen table. We started Plebity because we wanted to provide a platform for real issues and real people to have a voice—especially those voices that are so often silenced by mainstream media. https://www.plebity.org About Sasha
Sasha White is a co-founder and podcast host at Plebity.org, a nonprofit independent media platform and home of the Free Speech Fund, which fights back against cancel culture by awarding grants to people who have been materially punished for their speech or views.
Sasha co-founded Plebity after being fired in the summer of 2020. She believes in the importance of a pluralism of voices getting to say their piece without fear of censorship or punishment. To this end, she hosts an interview podcast on the Plebity YouTube channel called Crossroads, where she interviews a variety of people, many of whom have been smeared, de-platformed, or censored.

Sep 20, 2021 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, Sept 20 at 6:30 PM, we will hold an online-only club meeting. Our speaker will be Tammy Miller on ATX Kids.
Our meetings are now online using Zoom.
To join the meeting, go to https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84684272677
If you have not used Zoom before, see the instructions under Zoom and SET UP below.
About Tammy
Tammy Miller arrived in Austin in 2008 after escaping the cold winters of the northeast. Originally from Pennsylvania, followed by a couple years in Maryland, Tammy decided to move to her favorite city of Austin, Texas. As an Elementary Education graduate from Cabrini College and experience teaching in elementary schools in both Pennsylvania and Maryland, she accepted a position teaching first grade at a Title 1 Charter School in Southeast Austin. The transition to the Texas school system presented some challenges over the 5 years that helped her recognize her true passion. Upon reflecting on what impacted her most through her own educational journey as a student, it was the memory of her school field trips that she could remember best and still discuss in great detail. Taking these memories and the impact they had on her, she created the non-profit organization ATX Kids Club with a priority on the quality of the education and small ratios. Having intentionally moved to her favorite city, she wanted to provide a way for every child to explore Austin and experience the same level of love and passion for the amazing city we all enjoy. The partnership with Capital Metro provides the means to explore and helps ensure that children learn how to access their city independently. ATX Kids Club has provided opportunities for all youth to create their own memories, become inspired, and learn through these educational field trip adventures. She couldn't be more proud of the difference ATX Kids Club is making on the lives of many campers in and around the Austin area. About Rotary Club of Austin University Area

Oct 11, 2021 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, Oct 11th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an online-only club meeting. Our speaker will be Dr. Joyce Shaffer, PhD. She will speak on Changing Lives with Brain Power AT ANY AGE for ALL: Improving Global Statistics on Physical, Mental, Social & Brain Health through Neuroplasticity. You can learn more about the Brain Power AT ANY AGE program at https://idealaging.com/
As a cofounder of Brain Power AT ANY AGE® international project to prevent, delay onset, and/or reverse dementia, Joyce's talk will be on the Rotary areas of focus: 1) Disease prevention and treatment; 2) Maternal and child health to maximize brain health; 3) Education; AND 3) Peace.
Centenarians and supercentenarians are rapidly increasing in number. According to the World Health Organization, the “world is facing a situation without precedent: We soon will have more older people than children and more people at extreme old age than ever before.” The impact of COVID on our brain cells is sobering.
Let it not be the threat of dementia that drives us. Let us be driven by the magnitude of HOPE!!
Cutting-edge neuroscience describes evidence-based interventions, from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through end of life, which are associated with preventing, delaying onset and/or reversing dementia. Our aging population makes driving neuroplasticity in a positive direction for vigorous longevity urgent!
Fortunately, our oldest old provide models of successful aging. The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care concluded that “dementia is by no means an inevitable consequence of” aging and that interventions across the lifespan might “delay or prevent a third of dementia cases.” From conception through our oldest old, evidence-based interventions that improve health while also promoting prosocial behaviors can influence enormous personal, social, and economic benefits.

On Monday, Oct 18th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an online-only club meeting. Our speakers will be Sarah Rountree Schlessinger and Brianna Fuller of the Texas Water Foundation.
Texas Water Foundation
Texas’ population is projected to increase by over 70% in the next 50 years, and our current water supplies are declining. According to the 2022 State Water Plan, Texas will need to spend about $80 billion in water management strategies to meet that demand, and over 40% of our future water use will have to come from conservation and reuse. How do we get to that? Join Texas Water Foundation to learn about how Texas plans for its water future, some of our water grand challenges, and how a statewide campaign called Texas Runs on Water is part of the strategy.
Texas Water Foundation is a nonpartisan, nonprofit that is invested in the next generation of water leaders, equipping decision makers, and inspiring water champions to lead us into a sustainable water future.

He landed his first gig as a disc jockey in Lockhart playing soul and smooth jazz. KUT hired him in 1974 as part of their new diversity inclusion program and he began producing a show call "Soul on FM". He later developed "In Black America", a nationally syndicated radio series featuring weekly interviews with some of the most influential African American voices in our history. It is aired on Austin's NPR station as well as in 12 other major markets. A recent grant will allow this programming to be restored and digitized. John Dee set the stage and opened the door for so many others who could now see a future in broadcasting.

Nov 08, 2021 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, Nov 8 at 6:30 PM, we will hold a hybrid club meeting. Our speaker will be Dr Sheena Mason on the Theory of Racelessness.
The Theory of Racelessness specializes in decolonizing the raci(al/st) (i.e., racial and racist) imaginations by educating organizations & institutions on how racism masquerades as race in society.
You can find out more on Dr Mason and the Theory of Racelessness here:
Our meetings are now online using Zoom or you can join us in-person at Shoal Creek Saloon.
To join the meeting online, go to https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84684272677
If you have not used Zoom before, see the instructions under Zoom and SET UP below.
About Sheena
In May 2021, Sheena earned her Ph.D. “with distinction” from Howard University in Washington, DC. She joined the faculty at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, NY, in August 2021, as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in African American literature. Her forthcoming book Decolonizing the Raci(al/st) Imagination in Literary Studies: An Interrogation and Critique of Antiracist Discourse (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) presents a skeptical eliminativist philosophy of race and racism that results in her signature “theory of racelessness.” According to reviewers, her book is significant for many reasons. First, it is the first book in literary theory to track the genealogy of philosophies of race as held by prominent African Americans within a single book, even as it brings to the surface the lesser-known philosophies of racial skepticism and racial eliminativism. Second, it illuminates the practical application of alternative philosophies to reach better and more nuanced understandings of African American literature and philosophy and American society. Third, the theory of racelessness reverberates from literary studies and philosophy to virtually every other discipline, industry, and practice. About Rotary Club of Austin University Area:

Dec 06, 2021 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Dear all,
On Monday, Dec 6 at 6:30 PM, we will hold a hybrid club meeting. Our speaker will be Megan Niles on Aging Gracefully.
As we age, we tend to lose strength, flexibility, and balance, which may limit our mobility and independence, but this is not inevitable. Research has shown that a large portion of the “decline” we see as we age is simply due to disuse. As we age, we may not participate in as many activities, and may be sedentary for larger portions of the day. This is happening in younger and younger populations. The good news is that exercise can increase circulation, mood, strength, flexibility, and heart health, and help prevent certain diseases in as little as 8 weeks.
Join Megan as she takes us through mobility, postural, breathing, and strengthening exercises that can make a huge difference in your quality of life. Our meetings are now online using Zoom or you can join us in-person at Shoal Creek Saloon.
To join the meeting online, go to https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84684272677

About Megan
Megan is a National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), specializing in Pilates, Nutrition, and Pre/Postnatal Fitness. She focuses on core strength, functional movement, joint mobility, balance, alignment, pain reduction, injury prevention, intuitive eating, stress reduction, rewiring old patterns, and foundation movement basics such as how we breathe, walk, sit, work, and sleep. Megan has been working in health and fitness since 2004 and has worked with clients ranging in age from 1 year to 82 years old. She has a passion for helping people get the most out of their bodies and moving with as much freedom of movement as possible.
