On Monday, October 6th at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at Khon Thai restaurant. Our speaker will be Tom Goodman, the author of the award winning novel " The Last Man: A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery". The novel is closely based on a 1927 Texas true crime and involved a gun-toting, bank-robbing Santa Claus. You may have heard about the Santa Claus Bank Robbery. In December 1927, four men set out to rob the First National Bank of Cisco, Texas. Since the ringleader was robbing his hometown bank, he disguised himself as Santa Claus. Their easy heist went sideways fast. One bandit died in the shootout, one was executed in the state’s electric chair, and one was dragged out of jail by an angry mob and lynched. The Last Man: A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery won a 2024 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America and a 2024 Will Rogers Medallion Award. Also, the book was featured in a Christmas Eve edition of the Austin American-Statesman in 2023, the year it came out. Our meeting will be held at Khon Thai Restaurant, located at 5800 Burnet Rd. Please show up early to network and hang out with us. We encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us. We will buy a meal for our first time guests!
About Tom Goodman For over 40 years, Tom Goodman has served as a pastor in Louisana, the Cayman Islands and Texas. For the last 20 years, he has been the pastor of the Hillcrest Church in Austin. Tom is the author of several non-fiction books and articles, including over 50 entries in the Lifeway men's devotional magazine Stand Firm. Tom has been married to Diane, his high school sweetheart, since 1980. They have two adult sons. Tom enjoys fly fishing, scuba diving and puttering around his woodworking shop. On Monday, October 27th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker is Travis County Commissioner Brigid Shea.
She will discuss the environmental issues Travis County faces in the future, from water resources to wildfires.
Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78703. This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.
About Brigid Shea,
Brigid Shea is a former award-winning reporter at NPR stations who has proved her grit by fighting climate change in Texas since 1988. She helped save Austin’s iconic Barton Springs, organizing a massive city-wide ballot initiative that resulted in the historic SOS law to save Barton Springs. As a former Austin City Council member, she helped create the first wind project in Texas and championed consumer, electoral and environmental reforms.
Since being elected to the Travis County Commissioners Court in 2014, her work to reverse climate change and better prepare residents for climate impacts has won 4 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards; one for creating a neighborhood wildfire drill, the second for dramatically improving the reach of critical emergency warning systems, the third for significantly reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions through an ambitious remote work policy at the County, and the fourth for critical water conservation efforts through use of reclaimed treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes like air conditioning in several County buildings. Currently, Brigid serves as the US Board Chair of ICLEI, Local Governments for Sustainability; Vice Chair of NACo Environmental Energy Land Use Steering Committee; Vice Chair of NACo Resilient Counties Advisory Board; member of NACo Large Urban Counties Caucus; Executive Committee member of the Greater Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council, Compact Co-Chair for the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance; member of FEMA’s Resilient Nation Partnership Network; and Board of Director for the Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS). She previously served on the national board of Clean Water Action and the State Board of Texas Campaign for the Environment and is a former member of the Austin Chamber of Commerce Clean Energy Council. She has also advised the LCRA, Seton Hospital, and the City of Austin. She was selected for the 2019 Women in Government Leadership Program of Governing magazine. In 2010, her carbon-reduction work won the TCEQ Environmental Excellence award. The Texas Energy Summit also awarded her a lifetime achievement award. Brigid is a native of North Dakota. On Monday, November 10th at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at Shoal Creek Saloon. Our speaker is Lindsey Arasanagi of the Literacy Coalition of Ausin. The Literacy Coalition provides adult education services in Central Texas. We empower underserved adults and families by equipping them with the literacy and workforce skills needed to thrive in today’s economy. From career-specific English vocabulary to GED preparation and job-readiness training, we provide comprehensive, customized support to help adults succeed. Literacy Coalition partners with businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations to deliver flexible, community-based programs that meet the evolving needs of the Central Texas workforce.
About Lindsay Arasanagi Lindsey Cook Arasanagi is a dedicated nonprofit leader with more than a decade of experience in education, family services, and community-based program management. She currently serves as Director of Adult and Family Education at the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, where she leads initiatives that empower adults and families through literacy, workforce readiness, and two-generation (2-Gen) family education programs. In this role, Lindsey oversees a portfolio of adult and family education programs, managing a dynamic team and ensuring the successful implementation of grant-funded initiatives that expand literacy access across Central Texas. She provides strategic direction in budgeting, staff development, program evaluation, and community partnerships—advancing the organization’s mission to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty through education. Before joining the Literacy Coalition, Lindsey spent eight years with Child and Family Support Services in Arizona, where she advanced from Parent Aide to Program Manager. There, she managed statewide family preservation and reunification programs, developed trauma-informed service models, and led multidisciplinary teams supporting families involved with the Arizona Department of Child Safety. A graduate of Louisiana Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree, Lindsey is known for her collaborative leadership style, operational excellence, and commitment to empowering individuals and families through education and compassionate support. The cost is $25 per person. We have a fixed menu with 4 different entrees. Spouses and partners are more than welcome, and feel free to send the invite on to other friends of the club.
