American Gateways
Jan 06, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, January 6th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be Edna Yang, who is the Co-Executive Director for American Gateways, formerly the Political Asylum Project of Austin (PAPA).

American Gateways’ mission is to champion the dignity and human rights of immigrants, refugees, and survivors of persecution, torture, conflict and human trafficking through exceptional immigration legal services at no or low cost, education, and advocacy.  Since its inception in 1987, American Gateways become an indispensable legal services provider for low-income immigrants in Central Texas and are considered one of the most effective and efficient providers of immigration legal services in the nation. Last year, we served 12,000 very low-income immigrants, those at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Without the help of American Gateways, these individuals would not be able to afford any legal representation and would face a complex immigration system alone.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.

About Edna Yang,

Edna Yang is the Co-Executive Director for American Gateways, formerly the Political Asylum Project of Austin (PAPA), where she oversees the programs and services for the agency. Edna served as the Agency’s Deputy Director from 2015- 2020, Legal Director from 2006-2015, and Interim Executive Director in 2012. Her work is guided by the belief that everyone deserves access to a fair and just legal system regardless of income.

Edna represents indigent immigrants before the Immigration Service, the Immigration Court, and in Federal Court. She also conducts training sessions for law enforcement officials and social service providers throughout central Texas and nationally on how to work with and provide services to immigrants in the community. She organizes outreach and educational sessions for immigrant members of the community.

Edna received her B.A. in Russian Language and Literature and Political Science from the University of Michigan and graduated with a J.D. and a M.A. in International Studies from American University in Washington, DC.

ANEW City - Daniel Pettit
Jan 27, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, January 27th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be Daniel Pettit.

ANEW City is a visionary urban development approach that prioritizes preserving natural environments in areas of growth. In decentralized smart cities, each critical resource—water, food, energy, and utilities—is distributed across multiple origin points. This microgrid-like system ensures that each resource is readily available at an equal distance from any resident, regardless of how far out they live. Instead of relying on traditional, centralized infrastructure that pushes resources further as the city grows, we will build cities that grow linearly, ensuring that growth is both manageable and sustainable. The goal is to design infrastructure that enables the city to expand indefinitely while maintaining harmony with its surroundings, creating a sustainable model for future development.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.

About Daniel Pettit,

Daniel Pettit is a serial entrepreneur with a diverse background. Born in Mexico, Daniel moved to the U.S. and enlisted in the military to help pay for college. He went on to build and exit a successful insurance agency, followed by a solar company launched during COVID. Currently, he is a commercial real estate agent. He has spent the past 4.5 years developing ANEW City, a transformative project focused on preserving nature and creating infrastructure that supports sustainable, indefinite urban growth.

Club Meeting - Dream Come True Foundation
Feb 10, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, February 10th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting.  Our speaker will be Michael Rayos.

Michael Rayos will be sharing information about how The Dream Come True Foundation’s model of wrap-around services has been proven to help individuals achieve their goals, move out of poverty, and positively impact their surrounding community. They believe the most underserved people in poverty are the people who want out. They provide the means and the opportunity for a Dream Achiever (“Achiever”) to gain the education and skills required to obtain a high-demand, family-sustaining income-level job. Their impact is profound and significant. They break the cycles of intergenerational poverty with determined individuals “on the cusp of success” and their families and provide foundational pathways through adult education, one-on-one mentoring, essential financial assistance, and access to community partnerships.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.

About Michael Rayos:

Michael Rayos is the chairman of the board of the Dream Come True Foundation (DCTF), a local non-profit organization with a mission to assist individuals who are on the cusp of escaping poverty and achieving success. An Austin native who grew up in East Austin, Michael currently works as a Cloud Security Engineer, a goal he achieved with the assistance of the Dream Come True Foundation, where he now holds a position on the board. He is a father to three adult children and two grandchildren, with one more grandchild arriving later this year.

ChemoRiders: A Rotary Journey of Hope
Mar 17, 2025 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

We are excited to welcome Jeff Molby, a Rotarian from Caro, Michigan where he's also been volunteering for the American Cancer Society. He's a minimalist who loves to travel, so in October 2023, he sold everything and set off on a multi-year bike tour around the country to promote the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program. Road to Recovery links people who have no way of getting treatment to volunteer drivers who can take them to their appointments.  ACS recently named him their 2024 Patient Support Volunteer of the Year for his efforts.

His journey from avid cyclist to advocate has helped connect cancer fighters with the support they need, proving that perseverance on the road mirrors the strength needed to fight cancer and recruit people who can make a difference. Join us to hear his story, learn about the impact of ChemoRiders, and discover how you can contribute to this meaningful cause.

This event is free and open to all. First-time visitors will receive a free dinner! Come early, grab a drink, and network before the talk begins.

  • Rowling Hall Garage (RHG on the UT map) at 1907 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705

The UT parking map (with Benedict Hall and parking highlighted) is attached to this calendar event, but the
https://parking.utexas.edu/maps/visitors official UT parking map is here.

On Mar 24, 2025 at  5:00 PM  we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be <<insert speaker or program here>>

Service Project with Rotaract: Assembling Snack Packs for the Unhoused
All of our meetings our free and are open to the general public.

In place of our regular meeting on Monday, March 24th, we will join Texas Rotaract and the Austin Cosmopolitan Rotary Club on a joint service project to assemble snack packs for The Other Ones Foundation, an Austin nonprofit supporting unhoused individuals. We'll focus on soft, easy-to-eat items like water, soft bars, tuna, and sweets.

Instead of our usual meeting place (Shoal Creek) and meeting time, we will meet at 5PM at the UT campus in Benedict Hall (BEN 1.122), located at 150 W 21st St, Austin, TX 78712.  It is on the South Mall.  There should be plenty of parking at the UT garages.  There are 3 garages close to Benedict Hall:
  • AT&T Convention Center (garage is CCG on the UT map).  It is at 1900 University Ave, Austin, TX 78705.  It is beneath the conference center.
  • Rowling Hall Garage (RHG on the UT map) at 1907 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705
  • Brazos Garage (BRG on the UT map) at 210 E. MLK Blvd, , Austin, TX 78712.  It is across from the Blanton Museum

The UT parking map (with Benedict Hall and parking highlighted) is attached to this calendar event, but the
https://parking.utexas.edu/maps/visitors official UT parking map is here.

Please don't miss this opportunity to spend time with our Rotaract Club and our Cosmo friends, and to do some hands on service work.

Color Run for Accelerated Readers at JJ Pickle Elementary
Mar 28, 2025 12:15 PM - 2:00 PM
On Friday, March 28th (the week after Spring Break) at 1:00 PM, JJ Pickle Elementary is having a Color Run for Accelerated Readers.  Accelerated Readers is a program at JJ Pickle where students get rewarded 4 times a year by reading enough books to reach 12 points during that period.  Each book is assigned different points based on grade and level of reading comprehension required for the book.

At the color run, students run around the track, and we throw colored powder on them!  It is a lot of fun, but please wear a white shirt (because you will get powder on you, too) and a hat (because it will be hot.). I will bring our name tags.  Please come early (hence the 12:15 start time) to check in at the front office so they can log you as a visitor.

We are a long time supporter of JJ Pickle, including the Bookspring program that provides some of the books for the Accelerated Reading program.

Field Trip - Austin Classical Guitar Education and Contest
Apr 14, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
On Monday, April 14th, we will NOT have our regular club meeting.  Instead, we are going to head to the AISD Performing Arts Center at 4 PM and visit our friends at Austin Classical Guitar (ACG) to get an in-person look at how the ACG Education program works at scale by witnessing a portion of a two-day adjudicated concert & sight reading event with students from across Austin. It will include over 40 groups with over 1,000 students.   We will meet with Executive Director Matt Hinsley in the lobby for a brief chat, and then step into the performance hall to see the contest.

ACG has been running this contest for AISD starting in 2013 - modeled after similar UIL events for orchestra and band. In exciting news, ACG will also run similar events in Dallas, Houston, Edinburg, Brownsville, and El Paso this spring to serve their partners in other parts of the state.  Executive Director Matt Hinsley will meet with us to give us a little overivew before we watch a group or two perform.

The Austin ISD Performing Arts Center offers a free 400-space parking garage for all PAC events, with entrances on Mueller Blvd and a private drive connecting to 51st St and Barbara Jordan Blvd. The general public should use the main lobby entrance located near Mueller Blvd.

Ride On Center for Kids (ROCK) .  ROCK provides equine-assisted services to children, adults, and veterans with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. ROCK’s participants see improvements in most aspects of their lives — from muscle tone, strength, flexibility and balance to cognitive, behavioral, communication and emotional improvements.

We will be screening a documentary on ROCK - "Where Horses Heal The Soul".
All the money raised from ticket sales goes to ROCK.

ROCK showed the trailer to the movie to our club and it really is amazing to see how individuals lives are changed simply by riding horses.
Nancy O'Meara Krenek, the founder of ROCK, will talk a bit about the mission of ROCK and how the film came about.
Afterwards, Twila Labar, the director of the documentary will talk for a few minutes, introduce the cast members and lead a Q&A.

Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at https://bit.ly/4jGVUca

Club Meeting at Shoal Creek - Foster Village
Jun 23, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, June 23rd at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be Director of Development at Foster Village, Audrey Vivar.

Foster parents often feel tired and alone.  Most families foster for less than a year, citing burnout and lack of support as the reason they stop.  At the same time, 85% of people who are not foster parents say they care about vulnerable children and want to help.

The mission of Foster Village is to provide a village of support for children and families experiencing foster care.  They do this by equipping caregivers with critical necessities when children are placed in their home, connecting them with ongoing trauma-informed therapeutic support services, and advocating for community engagement beyond the system.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.

About Audrey Vivar,

Audrey Vivar  is a passionate philanthropic leader dedicated to improving the lives of children and families, particularly in low-income communities. Before joining the team at Foster Village, she spent nearly eight years at The Salvation Army Austin, supporting programs that address family homelessness. As a native Austinite, she considers it a profound honor to serve the community she grew up in.
