On Monday, October 14th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be Executive Director of Austin Smiles, Renée Hanson Malone.
Austin Smiles – The Austin Plastic Surgery Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide sustainable surgical and post-surgical care to children born with cleft lip and palate in Central Texas and Latin America.
Children with cleft lip and palate often face one or more health and developmental complications without proper treatment. These complications include difficulties in feeding, speech, breathing, and hearing, compromised oral health and frequent ear infections. Austin Smiles believes every child born with a cleft lip or palate deserves access to life-changing care. Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd. This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.
About Renée Hanson Malone,
Ex. Director Renée Hanson Malone has 15 years of management, resource development, and communications experience, raising millions of dollars and community support for underserved populations in Austin, TX.
Renée received her M.A. in Latin American Studies and was employed as a Lecturer by the Latin American Studies and Spanish Departments at the University of Kansas. Much of her work in Austin has been dedicated to strengthening and diversifying funding sources to expand services to underserved populations. Before joining Austin Smiles, Renée served as the Chief Development Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area. She was also the Director of Development for the Austin Child Guidance Center, the Grants Development Specialist at Easter Seals Central Texas, and the Education Program Director/Grant Writer for Manos de Cristo. She currently serves as the Board President of LOLA-Local Opera Local Artists. In addition, she is a current Board member for Vela and serves on the Nonprofit Advisory Council for I Live Here I Give Here. Renée was a member of Impact Austin from 2015-2017. She volunteered as the international matching grants coordinator for the Rotary Club of Austin Downtown and is a past board member of Austin Cops for Charities. Her life's work is making a difference in the world and inspiring others to support humanity. She has always admired Austin Smiles' work in the community. On Monday, October 21st at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be University Rotary Nursing Scholarship awardees Jamie Joiner and Nicholas Garcia.
They will speak to us about how the scholarships allowed them to pursue their goal of becoming nurses. Gracie Motschman, who received her scholarship from the E Club of Central Texas, will join them. They are all attending the St. David’s nursing program in Round Rock and will graduate in May. Betty Richards will introduce them and tell us about the scholarship program.
Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd. This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.
About The University Rotary Nursing Scholarship Program,
The scholarship is $1500. A former club member, Martha Myers, started the program almost a decade ago. Every year, a proposal is sent to our board proposing we fund two scholarships through the Texas Nurses Association (TNA)District 5. TNA District 5 develops the scholarship application, solicits applications, provides our club with completed applications to select from, and holds a meeting to give out the scholarships and acquaint the awardees with their professional nursing organization. Please join us to learn more about this excellent program and how it changes lives – directly from the participants.

About Meagan Webb,
Meagan Webb is the Chief Executive Officer for the Children’s Advocacy Center Serving Bastrop, Lee, and Fayette Counties. Working for the agency since 2019, Meagan previously served as both the Director of Operations and Director of Multidisciplinary Team Services. From 2010 to 2019, Meagan was employed by the Center for Child Protection in Austin, TX, where she worked as their Director of Team Relations. During her tenure there, Meagan was the coordinator for both the Travis County Child Sex Trafficking Response Team and the Travis County Child Fatality Review Team.

About Laura Minnigerode,
Laura Minnigerode is the Development, Grants, and Donor Stewardship Manager at Texas Gun Sense. Laura has been a gun violence advocate for many years and has been involved in community-centric projects in Austin for 20 years.
Laura will discuss TGS's work to make meaningful changes in the current state legislative environment and cities across Texas. Texas Gun Sense (TGS) is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization that aims to end gun violence and tragedy in Texas through education, partnerships, and policy change. She will give us an update on Travis County with emphasis on the recently passed child care initiative, criminal justice issues, and park land acquisition. She has spoken to us before and is always enthusiastic and informative. Please try and attend this meeting. She is a good friend of this club.

About Ann Howard,
A native Texas, Ann earned BA, MPA, and JD from UT Austin. Following graduation from UT Law School she moved to Washington and was a staff member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Since returning to Austin she has been an active member of the community. She is a former member and President of the board of Any Baby Can, Executive Director of Ending Community Homeless Coalition (ECHO), a former PTA president, youth softball coach and congregation president at St Martin's Lutheran Church. She assumed office on January 1, 2021 and was reelected on November 5, 2024.

This event is free and open to the public!
On Monday, November 18th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, with student speakers from Team Jamaica of UT's Projects with Underserved Communities (PUC) program.
The PUC combines rigorous coursework with hands-on, practical experience. Engineering and Social Work students participate in a year-long course while researching and designing projects in response to community needs. They collaborate with a local partner and travel to the community to implement a community based service project during the summer following the completion of the academic course.
The mission of Team Jamaica is to transform a kitchen into a classroom and retrofit an e-learning space at Mount Hermon Primary and Infant School in Riversdale, Jamaica. The project will help reduce overcrowding and meet educational standards set by the Early Childhood Commission in Jamaica. 📚The students will be on-site in May 2025 to bring this project to life. The local partners in this project are the United Way of Jamaica and the Rotary Club of St. Catherine in Jamaica.

About Dr. Scott Aaronson,
He is a theoretical computer scientist and Schlumberger Centennial Chair of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin. His primary areas of research are computational complexity theory and quantum computing. He was awarded the 2020 ACM Prize in Computing "for groundbreaking contributions to quantum computing". Dr. Aaronson is also a founder of the Complexity Zoo wiki, which catalogs all classes of computational complexity.
