Color Run for Accelerated Readers at JJ Pickle Elementary
Mar 28, 2025 12:15 PM - 2:00 PM
On Friday, March 28th (the week after Spring Break) at 1:00 PM, JJ Pickle Elementary is having a Color Run for Accelerated Readers.  Accelerated Readers is a program at JJ Pickle where students get rewarded 4 times a year by reading enough books to reach 12 points during that period.  Each book is assigned different points based on grade and level of reading comprehension required for the book.

At the color run, students run around the track, and we throw colored powder on them!  It is a lot of fun, but please wear a white shirt (because you will get powder on you, too) and a hat (because it will be hot.). I will bring our name tags.  Please come early (hence the 12:15 start time) to check in at the front office so they can log you as a visitor.

We are a long time supporter of JJ Pickle, including the Bookspring program that provides some of the books for the Accelerated Reading program.

The Center for Open Science
Mar 31, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Academic misconduct and research malpractice are problems that have repercussions beyond the scientific community. But is it possible to make scientific research more trustworthy? This week, we will hear from Terry Foor, Director of Development with the Center for Open Science. Terry will describe how COS is working to make the research process more transparent and the research results more accessible, both here in the United States and around the world.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, come early, grab a drink, and network before the talk begins.

About Terry Foor

Terry Foor has been Director of Development with the Center for Open Science (COS) since June 2022. Terry is a Certified Fundraising Executive with a decade of experience in development and program management roles in the nonprofit sector. He specializes in Annual Fund giving and corporate philanthropy and has additional experience with major donors, grant funding, and event fundraising. Terry holds political science and sociology degrees from Western Michigan University and the University of Oklahoma. He is especially interested in the intersection of open science and open source software and how scientists face different challenges to adopting open science strategies and techniques based on their particular disciplines and communities of research practice.

Terry and his wife Meredith live and work in Austin, Texas. He is an active community volunteer and Rotarian as a member of the Austin Cosmopolitan Rotary Club.

Field Trip - Austin Classical Guitar Education and Contest
Apr 14, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
On Monday, April 14th, we will NOT have our regular club meeting.  Instead, we are going to head to the AISD Performing Arts Center at 4 PM and visit our friends at Austin Classical Guitar (ACG) to get an in-person look at how the ACG Education program works at scale by witnessing a portion of a two-day adjudicated concert & sight reading event with students from across Austin. It will include over 40 groups with over 1,000 students.   We will meet with Executive Director Matt Hinsley in the lobby for a brief chat, and then step into the performance hall to see the contest.

ACG has been running this contest for AISD starting in 2013 - modeled after similar UIL events for orchestra and band. In exciting news, ACG will also run similar events in Dallas, Houston, Edinburg, Brownsville, and El Paso this spring to serve their partners in other parts of the state.  Executive Director Matt Hinsley will meet with us to give us a little overivew before we watch a group or two perform.

The Austin ISD Performing Arts Center offers a free 400-space parking garage for all PAC events, with entrances on Mueller Blvd and a private drive connecting to 51st St and Barbara Jordan Blvd. The general public should use the main lobby entrance located near Mueller Blvd.

Jun 23, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, June 23rd at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting, our speaker will be Director of Development at Foster Village, Audrey Vivar.

Foster parents often feel tired and alone.  Most families foster for less than a year, citing burnout and lack of support as the reason they stop.  At the same time, 85% of people who are not foster parents say they care about vulnerable children and want to help.

The mission of Foster Village is to provide a village of support for children and families experiencing foster care.  They do this by equipping caregivers with critical necessities when children are placed in their home, connecting them with ongoing trauma-informed therapeutic support services, and advocating for community engagement beyond the system.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  This will be a very interesting program, we encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.

About Audrey Vivar,

Audrey Vivar  is a passionate philanthropic leader dedicated to improving the lives of children and families, particularly in low-income communities. Before joining the team at Foster Village, she spent nearly eight years at The Salvation Army Austin, supporting programs that address family homelessness. As a native Austinite, she considers it a profound honor to serve the community she grew up in.

Club Meeting at Shoal Creek - United Nations Association of Austin
Aug 11, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, August 11th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting at Shoal Creek Saloon.  Our speaker will be Aditi Joshi, Volunteer Executive Director of the Austin Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA).

The world needs the UN. The UN needs US

The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) is a movement of more than 20,000 Americans and U.S. residents who believe in the United Nation’s principles and values. With more than 230 chapters across the country and individual champions in more than 46 states and territories, UNA-USA advocates for a strong US-UN partnership in communities, on campuses, and within Congress. UNA-USA is part of the United Nations Foundation. It seeks to connect our grassroots supporters with U.S. decision-makers in support of a world that is just, peaceful, and prosperous on a healthy planet.

Among its many activities, the Austin chapter of the UNA assembles “dignity bags,” which are delivered to refugee camps in Matamoros for immigrants seeking asylum in the US. They have little to no access to basic facilities and everyday items required to maintain personal hygiene.  The Austin Chapter also supports the CEDAW, which is short for the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and provides a universal standard for women’s human rights. It addresses discrimination in areas such as education, employment, marriage and family relations, health care, politics, finance, and law.

Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd.  Our meetings are open to the public.  For first time visitors, dinner is on us.

ROCKRIDE Field Trip
Sep 15, 2025 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

On Monday, September 15th, we will NOT have our regular club meeting at This Monday,  but instead we will take a field trip to ROCK (Ride On Center for Kids) at 2050 Rockride Ln, Georgetown, TX. We will meet at 6:30 p.m.

We had a presentation on this remarkable program in March, but now we can experience it in action.  ROCK helps people with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. They use horses to help people build independence and life skills. We raised $3000 for ROCK in June when we screened the documentary about ROCK - "Where The Horses Heal The Soul".

We hope you can join us for what will be a very fun and rewarding experience.
