We empower underserved adults and families by equipping them with the literacy and workforce skills needed to thrive in today’s economy. From career-specific English vocabulary to GED preparation and job-readiness training, we provide comprehensive, customized support to help adults succeed.  Literacy Coalition partners with businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations to deliver flexible, community-based programs that meet the evolving needs of the Central Texas workforce.

About Lindsay Arasanagi

Feb 23, 2026 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

This event is free and open to all. First-time visitors will receive a free dinner! Come early, grab a drink, and network before the talk begins.

On Monday, January 12th at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at 5280 Burger and Taphouse at 7032 Wood Hollow Dr, Austin, TX 78731. Our speaker will be Peter Nelson on "Workforce Development: Building the Next Generation of Building Engineers”

The Austin Association of Facility & Maintenance Engineers (AAFAME) is a professional association dedicated to advancing the education, skills, and careers of building engineers and maintenance professionals while supporting the commercial facilities industry in Central Texas.

Peter Nelson will share an overview of AAFAME’s workforce development initiatives focused on strengthening and sustaining the future of the building engineering profession. Central to this effort is the development of BE Ready (Building Engineer)—a comprehensive training program designed to prepare individuals for careers in building operations and maintenance.

The BE Ready program will be available online, providing accessible, practical education for high school students and others seeking a skilled trade career without the need for a traditional four-year college or university path. Peter will also discuss the critical role of scholarships in ensuring this program reaches individuals from less fortunate backgrounds, helping remove financial barriers and create meaningful career opportunities in a high-demand industry.

About Peter Nelson:

Peter Nelson is the president of AAFAME and is the Lead Building Engineer with Aquila Management Services.  Prior to joining the AQUILA, Peter worked as a building technician at HPI for six years. During this time he performed maintenance at the TOBY Award-winning Class A property “The Summit at Lantana.”

Peter has a passion for good food. Not only does appreciate eating a great meal – he loves cooking as well!

While Ingrid Weigand has a Master’s Degree in Literature, she has been immersed in science   fair administration for over 20 years. After a varied career in the film/video/music industry, she served   as Marketing Communications Manager for the City of Austin’s electric utility, Austin Energy,   where managing the regional science fair - now known as the Greater Austin Regional Science   And Engineering Fair - became part of her responsibility. After her retirement from the City in 2013,   she founded the Austin Science Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to support the fair by fundraising, recruiting judges and volunteers, school outreach, networking in the STEM Community and assisting with the overall management of the fair. When Austin Energy relinquished its role as manager/title sponsor in 2023, her foundation assumed the full responsibility for conducting the fair.

On Monday, March 23rd, 2026 at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at 5280 Burger Bar and Taphouse at 7032 WoodHollow Drive.

Our speaker will be Dr. Kevin M. Anderson, co-ordinator of the Austin Water Conservation Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend.

The Austin Water Center for Environmental Research at the Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant is a partnership formed in 1989 with the University of Texas and Texas A&M University to support urban ecology studies for the City of Austin. Numerous Texas universities along with federal and state agencies work through the CER to utilize the Hornsby Bend site for education and research. The CER auditorium and classrooms are used by academic institutions, government agencies, and non-profit organizations for workshops, classes, exams, and meetings.

Hornsby Bend is nationally known for biosolids and yard trimmings recycling and as a research site for sewage recycling, soil ecology, biodiversity, riparian ecology, river hydrology, and more.  The 1200-acre site stretches along 3.5 miles of the Colorado River downstream of Austin and contains a diversity of bottomland and riparian habitats. Hornsby Bend is nationally known as one of the best birding sites in Texas – harboring over 360 species of birds and an abundance of other wildlife which are monitored through the CER’s citizen science programs and university researchers.

Hornsby Bend is a destination on the TPWD Central Texas ecotourism trail and is a popular Austin nature viewing site.

Please show up early to network and hang out with us.  We encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.  We will buy a meal for our first time guests!

About Dr. Kevin M. Anderson

Dr. Kevin M. Anderson has been the coordinator  of the Austin Water Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend
since 2000. His environmental career began on a Pennsylvania farm, and it has since ranged from running an organic farm in
Potomac, Maryland to helping start a river conservation foundation in Northeastern Hungary as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
He received his Master’s degree in Philosophy from Ohio University, where he taught philosophy and symbolic logic. He was
beginning his Ph.D. dissertation in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 when he met some UT geographers,
and they encouraged him to switch programs and become a geographer. He did. He completed his Ph.D. in Geography from the
University of Texas at Austin with a dissertation entitled:  Marginal Nature: Urban Wastelands and the Geography of Nature.
His research interests include urban ecology, rivers and riparian management, sustainable agriculture, environmental history, and, still, philosophy.
