Club Meeting at Khon Thai: Author Tom Goodman
Oct 06, 2025 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

On Monday, October 6th at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at Khon Thai restaurant.  Our speaker will be Tom Goodman, the author of the award winning novel " The Last Man:  A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery". The novel is closely based on a 1927 Texas true crime and involved a gun-toting, bank-robbing Santa Claus.  You may have heard about the Santa Claus Bank Robbery. In December 1927, four men set out to rob the First National Bank of Cisco, Texas. Since the ringleader was robbing his hometown bank, he disguised himself as Santa Claus. Their easy heist went sideways fast. One bandit died in the shootout, one was executed in the state’s electric chair, and one was dragged out of jail by an angry mob and lynched.

The Last Man: A Novel of the 1927 Santa Claus Bank Robbery won a 2024 Spur Award from the Western Writers of America and a 2024 Will Rogers Medallion Award. Also, the book was featured in a Christmas Eve edition of the Austin American-Statesman in 2023, the year it came out.

Our meeting will be held at Khon Thai Restaurant, located at 5800 Burnet Rd.  Please show up early to network and hang out with us.  We encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.  We will buy a meal for our first time guests!

Building the Next Generation of Building Engineers
Feb 23, 2026 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

This event is free and open to all. First-time visitors will receive a free dinner! Come early, grab a drink, and network before the talk begins.

On Monday, January 12th at 6:30 PM, we will hold a club meeting at 5280 Burger and Taphouse at 7032 Wood Hollow Dr, Austin, TX 78731. Our speaker will be Peter Nelson on "Workforce Development: Building the Next Generation of Building Engineers”

The Austin Association of Facility & Maintenance Engineers (AAFAME) is a professional association dedicated to advancing the education, skills, and careers of building engineers and maintenance professionals while supporting the commercial facilities industry in Central Texas.

Peter Nelson will share an overview of AAFAME’s workforce development initiatives focused on strengthening and sustaining the future of the building engineering profession. Central to this effort is the development of BE Ready (Building Engineer)—a comprehensive training program designed to prepare individuals for careers in building operations and maintenance.

The BE Ready program will be available online, providing accessible, practical education for high school students and others seeking a skilled trade career without the need for a traditional four-year college or university path. Peter will also discuss the critical role of scholarships in ensuring this program reaches individuals from less fortunate backgrounds, helping remove financial barriers and create meaningful career opportunities in a high-demand industry.

About Peter Nelson:

Peter Nelson is the president of AAFAME and is the Lead Building Engineer with Aquila Management Services.  Prior to joining the AQUILA, Peter worked as a building technician at HPI for six years. During this time he performed maintenance at the TOBY Award-winning Class A property “The Summit at Lantana.”

Peter has a passion for good food. Not only does appreciate eating a great meal – he loves cooking as well!
