Apr 10, 2023 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
On Monday, April 10th at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting. Deepak Burman will be speaking about the RI Global Grant Harvesting Rainwater.
Our meetings are now at 5280 Burger Bar, 7032 Wood Hollow Drive, Austin, Texas 78731.
About RI Global Grant Harvesting Rainwater,
Project Objective & Purpose: Water is life. It is available in abundance, yet it is limited. We need water for everything be it agriculture, industry, or household. We need it every day. But today, across the globe, humans are not utilizing but exploiting water resources. The water table is going down, wells are being dug deeper and deeper to get water for irrigation, household, industrial and all other needs. The exploitation of Groundwater is reaching alarming limits. Water is depleting fast and in every city the water table is going down creating all sorts of problems including environmental imbalances. It is said that the next World War would be for water. Recently, Capetown was without water and immediate steps were taken to stop any wastage of water. We need to find a sustainable way to reduce depletion of water tables, recharge the local acquifers, reduce urban flooding and mitigate climate changes. India receives a good amount of rainfall. There is a notion that rainwater that falls/collects in the open grounds enriches the water table. In reality, most of it is only absorbed by soil, then a lot of water is lost due to evaporation and barely 5-10% reaches the water table. A good 50% of the total rainwater gets mixed with the drain water and becomes unsuitable for human consumption. To get back clean water from the polluted water a lot of cost, time and effort has to be spent. However, if this rainwater is stopped from running down the drains and is instead harvested, then it can be used for supporting the underground water table, this way we can definitely move the water shortage to a future date and support the recharge of Ground water table. Setting up Rainwater harvesting units is a good way to recharge the groundwater table. About Rotary Club of Austin University Area:

On Monday, August 21st at 6:30 PM, we will hold an in person club meeting. Our speaker will be Charity Armstrong, Board President, LLT (Ladies Let’s Talk).
Our meeting will be held at Shoal Creek Saloon, located at 909 N. Lamar Blvd. We encourage you to invite family, friends, and colleagues to join us.
About Charity Armstrong,
Ladies Let's Talk (LLT) is a Texas non-profit which for the past 5 years has helped immigrant and refugee women find belonging in their new environment. The organization pairs these women with female volunteers for language practice, daily life guidance, friendship, and sisterhood. LLT currently provides free online conversation sessions, pronunciation workshops, citizenship training, English practice mentorship, and English literacy classes for Afghan women. From a young age, Chichi has been dedicated to aiding others, starting with fundraising for the Red Cross in her childhood, working with disabled adults, taking summer jobs with non-profit agencies, and tutoring grade school students. Her career at Xerox spanned two decades as she moved from secretary to senior financial manager. Transitioning to non-profit roles in 1992, she served as an arts director, community policing organizer, and community chorus president. In her 60s, she pursued her lifelong passion for jazz piano, performing across the Midwest. Settling in Austin in 2015, she engaged with refugees through Hope and Sesame, leading to the establishment of Ladies Let's Talk in 2018. Currently, Chichi's central focus is making connections between Austin women and immigrant/refugee women, to foster a sense of belonging for these newcomers while improving their English skills. As LLT's board president, she's working to grow the organizational and financial capabilities of LLT to meet the escalating demand for its programs in Austin and the broader US.
