Dick Pyle, Ph.D.,will talk to us about the close relationship between Rotary and the Peace Corps, including the work of Partnering for Peace which bridges the two organizations. Dick was instrumental in the creation of Partnering for Peace. Since serving as a 60’s Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica, Dick Pyle has worked to establish connections with Rotary and Peace Corps. Because of his work in academia as a Dean of Students, Director of Counseling and faculty member coupled with his 40 years of Rotary membership he has either personally developed or inspired numerous short term service programs to his Peace Corps village. Consequently, over a 1000 students have had a one to two-week cross-cultural learning experience modeled after the Peace Corps and under the joint sponsorship of Rotary in the US and Jamaica. Most of this took place during his time at The University of Texas and his membership and presidency of the NW Austin Rotary Club. Dick left Austin in 2002 to go to work at Peace Corps headquarters as a psychologist supporting PCV’s in the field with their emotional and trauma challenges. His membership with Rotary continued with the D.C. Rotary Club and with his Peace Corps agency connection he was instrumental in developing a recently signed partnership with Rotary International and Peace Corps. Today we will have an opportunity to gain greater understanding of the Peace Corps while learning about this partnership with Rotary. Dick has a Ph.D. from the University of Florida and an undergraduate degree from William Jewell College. He has worked in several colleges and universities with the most recent being at UT. Besides his PCV experience he directed the Peace Corps Latin America Training Center in Puerto Rico in the early 70’s, directed Peace Corps operations in the Eastern Caribbean while living in St. Lucia in the early 90’s and served as the chairman of the board of the Peace Corps Alumni association in the late 90’s. Dick and his wife Betty served together as Peace Corps Volunteers. Betty is with us today. They have 4 children and 4 grandchildren and maintain a condo here in Austin to be close to their son and his family during the winter months. And to get out of the cold of the D.C. area to play tennis outdoors!! #Rotary #1DistrictStrong #PeopleOfAction Rotary District 5870 Central Texas

Gerald Daugherty, Travis County Commissioner for Precinct 3, will be speaking to us about the new transportation plan as well as other issues before the Travis County Commissioners Court. Gerald Daugherty grew up in the Houston area and was drafted out of high school by the Boston Red Sox baseball organization. He soon realized that an education was more obtainable than making it to the big leagues, returned to Austin, and graduated from the University of Texas in 1975. For the past 40 years Gerald has been a successful Austin businessman, owning and operating successful ventures including the Pleasant Valley Sportsplex. In 2009 he assembled a team of talented individuals and opened the highly successful Jack Allen’s Kitchen Restaurant located in Oak Hill. In 2012 the second location was opened in Round Rock and in 2015 the third location was opened in the Davenport area at 360 and Westlake Dr.
For the past two decades, Gerald has continued to say that added roadway capacity and intersection improvements are the most important components of helping with our traffic. Removing lanes on major roads for buses, bikes, or any other idiotic idea needs to end if we are serious about our mobility crisis. In 2002, he was elected to the Travis County Commissioners Court bringing his passion for transportation advocacy and his belief that government can accommodate growth without continually having to raise the money from higher taxes. Increased revenue from new construction both residential and commercial should be the revenue source for that growth. *The only exception to this should be that voter approved debt may need to increase tax rates.* He served as Travis County Commissioner of Precinct 3 until 2008. He returned to the Commissioners Court in January of 2013 and continues to work to help keep county taxes at bay and to shape the future of transportation projects for the Travis County area.
Commissioner Daugherty is the elected official representing the residents of Precinct Three in Travis County. You can find out more about him at https://www.traviscountytx.gov/commissioners-court/precinct-three

Tonight our speaker will be Cynthia Smith from Sparks for Success. Sparks for Success! was founded to support children affected by parental incarceration. Research paints a dismal picture for many children of inmates who, along with their family members, are overwhelmed by their circumstances. While working with students, they've realized that a holistic approach is necessary to change the trajectory of our children away from generational incarceration.
Sparks for Success helps students develop the life skills of discipline and perseverance by teaching them to play an instrument and giving them group music instruction. By incorporating Music Therapy into a program and creating a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) environment, students will progress both academically and socially. For more information, see https://sparksforsuccess.org/our-programs/
Cynthia founded Sparks for Success! in 2016 after serving for three years as the Texas branch Director for an out of state organization, also serving children of inmates. The issues we were seeing for the children we work with in Central East Austin caused us to realize a different model is necessary if we want to have a real impact on ending intergenerational incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline. This ignited the spark that has become Sparks for Success! Cynthia holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Master of Business Administration. She has studied piano at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, the University of Delaware, the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Salzburg, and The University of Texas at Austin, and studied business administration at St. Edward’s University (Austin). For more than 40 years, Cynthia’s teaching career has encompassed private piano lessons, class theory, and general music classes. She has also directed children’s choirs throughout that time. Her experience includes working with children in early childhood development through music. On the business side, Cynthia was the Director of Administration and Operations for 19 years for the RGK Foundation. Throughout the years she has served on several boards and has been active as a volunteer in her community. |

Patrick will speak to how digital and alternative payment methods are changing how banks do business, as a growing, younger generation is slow to adopt services that cannot be done online through their mobile devices. Patrick Johnson has been a banker in Austin for 20 years. Starting in 1999 at JP Morgan Chase, where he worked for 7 years as Branch Manager and then as Business Relationship Manager for the South Austin market. He then moved to First State Bank Central Texas (2006-2016) as a Commercial Banker, progressing to President & Branch Manager, weathering the recession to consistently grow a commercial relationship portfolio by responding to the needs of small- and medium- sized businesses not often met by big banks. In mid 2016 he was hired as the CEO of Frontier Bank of Texas, and charged with accelerating the growth of the successful, ten-year-old bank into Travis and Williamson Counties, expanding it in just 3 years from two locations to six.
