It's time for our multi-club spring fundraising event at Austin Playhouse! Lucky Stiff is an offbeat, hilarious murder mystery farce, complete with mistaken identities, six million bucks in diamonds and a corpse in a wheelchair. The story revolves around an unassuming English shoe salesman who is forced to take the embalmed body of his recently murdered uncle on a vacation to Monte Carlo. Should he succeed in passing his uncle off as alive, Harry Witherspoon stands to inherit $6,000,000. If not, the money goes to the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn... or else his uncle's gun-toting ex! We will have snacks at the theater, and drinks are available for purchase at the bar. A note about getting to the theatre (from https://www.austinplayhouse.com/directions ) As you enter the parking lot from Airport Blvd, make a left (if coming from the north) or a right (if coming from the south) and follow the parking lot around, keeping the mall on your right, until you reach the South entrance. Enter the mall and take the stairs or elevator down to the lower level. Turn right. Austin Playhouse will be on your right.
Should you require wheelchair accessible entry:The Highland Campus has an elevator at the South Entrance. There is also a ground floor loading zone entrance located to the right of the mall’s South entrance. Please call the box office at 512-476-0084 for directions.

Ken Herman, a Brooklyn native still trying to figure out how he became a longtime Texas journalist, currently serves as the Austin American-Statesman’s metro columnist, which means he writes about whatever he wants to write about and hopes his bosses want to read it. Herman began his newspaper career in 1975 at The Lufkin Daily News in East Texas. In 1977, he joined The Associated Press in Dallas and subsequently worked for The AP in Harlingen, and Austin.
In 1988, he was named Austin Bureau Chief for The Houston Post, leading that paper’s coverage of state government and politics.
When the Post folded in 1995 (not completely Herman’s fault), he became Capitol Bureau Chief for the Austin American-Statesman. In 2001, after covering George W. Bush’s presidential campaign, Herman went to Washington for a six-month stint as Cox Newspapers White House Correspondent.
He returned to the American-Statesman in June 2001 to resume covering state government and politics. In June 2004, Herman returned to Washington to cover the Bush re-election campaign and later resumed his role as Cox Newspapers White House Correspondent from January 2005 through February 2009, when he again returned to the Austin newspaper.
During his Washington stint, Herman was elected to the board of the White House Correspondents Association.

Randall Parr will describe the history and progression of Early Act First Knight (EAFK). AUARC has been long time sponsors of EAFK at Pecan Springs Elementary. After ten years as a professional multimedia producer and part-time seminary student, Randall Parr was selected by the United States Navy to become an officer in the Chaplain Corps. In addition to providing ministry and counseling to sailors, Marines and their families in the Western Pacific and continental United States, he created award-winning media training productions for the Navy Chaplain School, along with large-scale motivational events for military recruits that were regularly used across service lines at Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force training centers across the nation. Completing his military service, Randall developed a creative educational program that would teach character-building to elementary and middle school students through the theme of knights and chivalry from Arthurian literature. Known as “The Knight Life”, this program was awarded a grant from The Washington Times in the year 2000 for being voted one of the most influential community services in the United States. Nominated for the award by Senator Jim Inhofe (of Oklahoma), Randall and “The Knight Life” team were honored at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. by members of the President’s Cabinet, United States Senate and Congress. In 2006, Randall introduced a plan to The Rotary Club of Boerne, TX, which would transform “The Knight Life” program into a new kind of service outreach for Rotary Clubs and make the Four Way Test come alive for young schoolchildren. By combining daily classroom academics, campus visits by armored knights, and the onsite guidance of local Rotarians in conducting campus service initiatives, elementary and middle school students could internalize the noble traits resulting in “service above self” during their most formative years as a part of their daily educational experience. Dubbed “EarlyAct FirstKnight” (a.k.a. “EAFK”), the new program was successfully piloted in 2007 at an elementary campus in Boerne with 500 students through the sponsorship of the Boerne Rotarians. Having since added Social Skills development to its character-building track, EAFK has expanded as a Rotary Project to schools in eleven Rotary Districts, ranging from Texas to California, to the Carolinas; has had events visited and participated in by the past five Rotary International Presidents; and, is presently being studied by approximately 50,000 children every school day, all of whom are using the Four Way Test as their chief behavioral discipline. EAFK’s first international expansion is planned for the Fall of 2018 in Trinidad, through the joint sponsorship of the Rotary Clubs of La Grange, TX and Central Port of Spain For more information, see http://www.eafk.org/

Cheer on the students of Pecan Springs elementary as they are knighted for their exemplary character by a knight in full regalia! This is a part of the EarlyAct FirstKnight® (or EAFK) character education program from Knights of the Guild. Sponsored by Rotary Clubs, EAFK motivates and teaches children of all backgrounds to become civil, service-oriented people during their most formative years. Austin University Area Rotary Club sponsors the EAFK program at Pecan Springs Elementary. Together with the Austin Cosmopolitan Rotary Club, we provide 100% financial support for the program and volunteer at the Knighting Ceremonies at the end of each six week grading period. Dana DeBeauvoir has always been inspired by public service. Her interest led her to obtain a Masters Degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs and ultimately to run for public office. Since her election as County Clerk in 1986, Dana has devoted herself to bringing high ethical standards, effective and cost efficient management practices, the benefits of new technology, and high quality customer service to the office of the County Clerk. The Clerk’s Office has a wide range of responsibilities including the conduct of elections; the filing and preservation of real property records; and the management of civil, probate, and misdemeanor court documents. Dana’s commitment to excellence in government has received nationwide acclaim. In 2009, Dana was named Public Official of the Year by the National Association of County Recorders, Election Officials, and Clerks (NACRC). The National Association of Election Officials (Election Center) also awarded Dana with the 2009 Minute Man Award for developing a security practice that is effective, inexpensive, and easy for election officials to adopt. In 2005, she was the national recipient of the Election Center’s Best Practices Award for her work in using risk analysis to implement security measures for electronic voting systems. Travis County is also recognized across the country for its groundbreaking early voting program that is centered on customer-friendly polling locations in high-traffic retail locations. Dana is particularly proud of the passion Travis County voters have for democracy and was honored by the opportunity to share their enthusiasm with other parts of the world. Dana has served as an advisor and election observer for Bosnia, the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, Kosovo, and the historic South Africa election that represented the end of apartheid. Dana has brought innovation to the Clerk’s Recording Division, which is responsible for receiving and maintaining a vast library of documents that includes real property transactions, business names, and marriage licenses. During her tenure, the once handwritten indexes and vulnerable cloth-bound books that hold some of the County’s most precious and important documents are now preserved as digital or film images. Access to millions of these documents is now available online and our new eRecording program allows for the electronic filing of many documents. These programs save customers’ time, reduce costs, and help the environment by decreasing the amount of paper and car trips to the office. To help prevent identify theft, the Clerk’s Office implemented one of the nation’s most aggressive redaction programs that blocks personal information (such as Social Security Numbers) from appearing on internet documents. This Office also serves as Clerk of the Courts and manages the documents used in the County’s probate, civil, and misdemeanor court proceedings. Dana has used technology and enhanced work flow measures to secure the safety of this large volume of records and has implemented new systems such as eFiling and document imaging to convert the cumbersome paper-laden process to one that utilizes electronically filed and retrieved documents. These new methods not only make it easier for defendants and their attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to quickly view and file information; but save the cost of storing and securing millions of pages of paper documents. Dana DeBeauvoir continues her efforts to protect the integrity and accessibility of the election process, to use effective and cost efficient practices and technology to manage real property and court documents, and to do her best to serve each and every citizen of Travis County.
